The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is a global non-profit working across seas, oceans, and in more than 40 countries around the world. To listen to their global workforce, IFAW has conducted full engagement surveys with Newmeasures every two years since 2016. In the early years, the biggest opportunity highlighted related to trust in senior leaders, especially regarding communication and leaders holding employees accountable for their performance.
The IFAW team developed a multi-year strategy to improve employee trust in leadership. Newmeasures’ role was to help evolve their existing survey to explore perceptions of leadership and performance management more deeply to inform actions they could take. Their post-survey actions included quick wins and longer-term efforts. Senior leaders immediately increased communications with their employees. More formally, they have initiated global calls to share what they are working on, explain the reason behind decisions, and give space for employees to ask questions. Their approach evolved from senior leaders sharing the survey results with employees to having Newmeasures transparently present the data to all employees, allowing them to ask questions openly. IFAW addressed performance accountability concerns over the course of about 2 years by implementing a standardized online performance management system that supports continuous feedback loops and equips people leaders with the training needed to effectively manage the performance of their teams.
